weekend Wellington Sports Centre was host to one of the
highlights of the south west’s sporting calendar when another
record 400 athletes faced the challenge of the Taunton Deane
Foot Anstey Triathlon. Although the weather threatened to be an
added challenge, most of the day remained dry allowing some fast
times to be set. The
event, organised
by Somerset RC Tri Club and Tone Leisure and sponsored by Foot
Anstey, is in its 13th year but proving even more
popular than ever - selling out in just two days in early
January. The
race is well-liked because it has something for every level of
fitness. The Sprint event is for the more experienced athletes
and a Novice event is open to anyone new to this event or who
has taken part in less than three triathlons in the past. For
the second year running, an electronic timing system was used
which allowed the athletes to see their split times for each
element of the Triathlon and their final finish time immediately
after crossing the finishing line – adding to the excitement
of the event. Foot
Anstey Solicitors, sponsors of the event for the fourth year
running, really got behind the event entering 13 of their own
staff, with prize winners in three categories; Alan Hughes was
first Senior Male in the Sprint event, Anna Roderick was second
Senior Female in the Novice event and Penny Eyre was first
Supervet female in the Novice event. The triathletes used Wellington Sports Centre pool for the
swim element and the quiet roads towards
Milverton and Wiveliscombe were used for the cycle ride and a
mixture of footpaths and lanes for the run, where the weather
didn’t dampen the spirits of the marshalls who were all
volunteers from the local community and sports clubs. Andrew
Hannam, partner at Foot Anstey and regular competitor said; “It
was an incredible turnout of both competitors and supporters. I
was particularly proud of the number of our staff that entered
and of those who won their categories too. Particular thanks
must go to the marshalls who gave up their time to help and to
the staff at Wellington Sports Centre for making us so welcome
once again.”
